Antoine Griezmann received a harsh welcome on his return to Madrid, but did the Atletico fans go too far?

Atletico Madrid could still face punishment from the Spanish FA after their supporters abused former player Antoine Griezmann with “die” chants during Sunday’s Spanish league match against Barcelona.

Reports initially suggested the club had escaped punishment after their fans made threatening chants but the Spanish FA has subsequently clarified to ESPN that a €301 ($333) fine was specifically for objects being thrown onto the pitch during the game, including an umbrella.

A separate case has been launched into the “Griezmann die” chants, with a resolution not expected for several weeks.

The Spanish league denounced the club to the federation’s anti-violence committee, saying about 2,000 fans from Atletico’s “ultras” section made the chants for about 20 seconds before the start of the second half, and again later in the game.

Griezmann left Atletico for Barcelona at the end of last season in a transfer worth more than €120 million ($132m).

The France forward was jeered nearly every time he touched the ball at the Metropolitano on Sunday. It was his first match at Atletico’s stadium since leaving the club.

Barcelona won 1-0 with an 86th-minute goal by Lionel Messi.
