Manchester United have extended the contract of midfielder Nemanja Matic until 2021.
Matic, 31, had entered the final 12 months of his existing deal but the club have triggered an option in his contract to keep him at Old Trafford for another year.
The Serbia international struggled to hold down a regular place in the team at the start of the season and said he was unsure if he remain at United next season.
But injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay enabled Matic to return to the side and become a fixture in United’s 11-match unbeaten run, before the world of football was halted due to the coronavirus outbreak.
At the start of March, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told a news conference: “He will stay here. Yeah, 100%. We have agreed with him so he will stay.”
Meanwhile, United will no longer hold training at their Carrington base in line with governmental advice over the coronavirus.
The government urged the country on Monday to avoid gatherings and crowded places.
European football has been heavily affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The Champions League and Europa League have been suspended while the Premier League is also on hold until April 3 at the earliest.
