They will be without their striker, who is still seeking his first club minutes since January after recently returning from a hamstring injury.
The Mexico roster from manager Jaime “Jimmy” Lozano is headlined by noteworthy figures such as Salernitana‘s Guillermo Ochoa, West Ham‘s Edson Álvarez, Feyenoord‘s Santiago Giménez and PSV Eindhoven‘s Hirving Lozano.
Despite leading the region in Gold Cup titles with nine total, Mexico has yet to clinch a Nations League trophy, which has been secured by the United States in the two editions of the tournament that have been held since its inception in 2019-20.
In the other upcoming semifinal on March 21, the U.S. will take on Jamaica.
All four of the Nations League finals matches will be hosted at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Elsewhere in Mexico’s roster, Pumas goalkeeper Julio González, Chivas defender Jesús Orozco, Cruz Azul midfielder Carlos Rodríguez and Monterrey defender Erick Aguirre were brought back into the squad after being left out of November’s 26-man call-up for the quarterfinal stage of the Nations League.
González remains the lone player in the 23-man roster that has yet to earn an appearance for the senior national team.
Following the Nations League, Mexico will take part in friendlies vs. Bolivia (May 31 at Soldier Field in Chicago), Uruguay (June 5 at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver) and Brazil (June 8 at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas) in preparation for the 2024 Copa América.
At the Copa América, which will also be hosted in the U.S. and kicks off on June 20, Mexico are set to face Ecuador, Venezuela and Jamaica in the group stage.
Earlier this week, the FMF revealed the national team’s latest kits that will be used at the Copa América.
Later in 2024, El Tri will also take part in U.S.-based friendlies vs. New Zealand (Sept. 7 at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena) and Canada (Sept. 10 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington).
Still seeking match fitness but recently recovering from injury, Jiménez could soon make his return for Fulham vs. Tottenham on Saturday.
Ahead of the Premier League match, Fulham head coach Marco Silva said: “Everyone is available. All the players can be involved.”
