The United States women rolled to a 4-1 win over Germany in Olympic soccer on Sunday in Group B, assuring they will have a spot in the quarterfinals after two wins from two games.
The U.S. women’s attack was purring in the first half in Marseille, with Sophia Smith scoring twice and Mallory Swanson tapping home the rebound from a stellar strike from Smith for the Americans’ third goal of the half, while Germany briefly levelled the score on a long-distance shot by Giulia Gwinn.
Starter Tierna Davidson came off shortly before half-time after picking up a lower leg injury, with Emily Sonnett replacing her.
Second-half substitute Lynn Williams put the game out of reach after coming on in the 85th minute, finishing from a Swanson assist on a counter-attack to wrap up all three points.
