Wrexham were denied victory by a late goal for the second straight week as Bristol Rovers handed the visitors another blow in their automatic promotion push on Saturday.

Promise Omochere struck with four minutes remaining with Rovers’ first shot on target to cancel out Elliot Lee’s early opener as Wrexham, owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were made to pay for missing a host of chances in the 1-1 draw.

The result means Phil Parkinson’s side stay third in English football’s third tier, trailing Wycombe Wanderers and Birmingham City, who both play later on Saturday. Only the top two are promoted automatically to the Championship.

It all started so well for Wrexham at the Memorial Stadium, with top scorer Lee notching his sixth goal of the season in the 18th minute.

But exactly a week after throwing away a lead at home to Cambridge City late on, Wrexham ceded their advantage to the side lying 19th in the division when, in the 86th minute, Omochere headed home.

Wrexham, looking for their third straight promotion, take on Blackpol next on Boxing Day.
