The opening goal came from a sublime counter-attack in the 34th minute. From a free kick, Timo Werner‘s block of a Kieran Trippier cross went to Kai Havertz who played in a sprinting Werner before the Germany international laid the ball off for Ziyech to slot home.

The strike was Ziyech’s seventh in the Champions League, which breaks a tie with Youssef En-Nesyri for second-most among Morocco internationals. Only Marouane Chamakh, with eight, has more.

The goal also triggered a forgettable milestone for Atletico, who have now conceded at least once in each of their seven visits to English clubs in the competition.

Ziyech came off in the 77th minute for United States midfielder Christian Pulisic who collected the assist when Emerson fired home from another swift counter in stoppage time.

Stefan Savic was sent off for an elbow of Antonio Rudiger in the 81st minute.

The draw for the quarterfinals will be held during a ceremony on March 19.
