Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi was arrested on suspicion of rape in the early hours of Sunday morning after police were called to his house by a woman who told police she had been raped, sources told ESPN.
Hudson-Odoi, 19, was questioned by police on Sunday and Monday morning before being released on bail. He is due to report back to police in June.
A police spokesman said metropolitan police officers and an ambulance were called to Hudson-Odoi’s apartment in Battersea, West London, at 3:35 a.m. Sunday after a report of an unwell woman.
“When emergency services attended, a woman reported that she was raped. She was taken to hospital. A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of rape. He was released from custody and bailed to return on a date in mid-June,” the spokesman said.
Police also returned to the England international’s home to conduct further investigations.
Chelsea declined to comment when contacted by ESPN, but the club are likely to seek a detailed explanation from Hudson-Odoi. The severity of the claims is set to raise serious questions at Chelsea over his conduct, in addition to the breach of lockdown measures imposed by government in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Hudson-Odoi was one of the first footballers in the UK to test positive for COVID-19 in March and is due to return to group training this week if the Premier League vote to accept safety protocols determined by discussions between clubs, players, medical experts and government.
