England captain Harry Kane has said he is “heartbroken” as the team return to the U.K. from Germany after losing 2-1 to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

England suffered the defeat as substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored a late winner in Berlin on Sunday.

Nico Williams scored first in Spain’s win two minutes into the second half, and despite Cole Palmer‘s equaliser, La Roja ended victorious — taking home their fourth European Championship title.

Kane reacted to the defeat on Monday, posting on X: “Heartbroken we couldn’t achieve what we worked so hard to. It was a long tough tournament and I’m so proud of the boys and staff for getting to the final.

“Ultimately we fell short of our target and will have to live with that but as we always do we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and be ready to fight again in an England shirt.

“Thank you to all the fans that believed in us and supported us to the very end!”

Gareth Southgate and the England players were applauded by fans as they left their hotel in Berlin but will not be greeted by supporters when they land, as the FA announced that the team and staff will arrive back in the U.K. via a private terminal.

“We thank you, our incredible fans, for all your support throughout the tournament,” the FA wrote on a post on X.
