United, the only side to take points off Liverpool this season, travel to Anfield on Sunday but instead of watching the game the City manager will use his time to brush up on Sheffield United, who his team face at Bramall Lane on Tuesday.

“They’ve won 21 of 22 games and they’d be leading all the leagues around the world,” said Guardiola.

“It would be nice to focus on Wilfried Zaha and Crystal Palace, and then Tuesday we have Sheffield United.

“Being so far away means it’s not interesting to look at what Liverpool do.

“It’s better to focus on what we can do for the rest of the season in the Premier League and other competitions.”

City moved back into second place behind Liverpool after their 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa.

The squad celebrated the comprehensive victory at Villa Park with a night out but Guardiola has insisted the they had his permission during a rare week without a midweek game.

“I think I knew it,” said Guardiola. “When they have time, they make a lot of times dinners together, with the staff. They did it many times anyway.

“And I like it when they are together outside here, they do it sometimes at home, sometimes in a restaurant as was the case. It was nice.”
