Manchester United have signalled their intent to reimburse fans if the season cannot be completed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Supporters who have already paid for tickets for United’s four remaining Premier League home games will get their money back if the fixtures are cancelled or played behind closed doors.

United insist they “fully support the collective intent to complete the Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA club competitions” but there is no indication yet about when the shutdown might end.

The club have also postponed the season ticket renewal deadline for the 2020-21 season which had originally been set for May 1.

Richard Arnold, Manchester United group managing director, said: “We appreciate the patience and the support we have had from our fans throughout this challenging time and welcome the constructive discussions we have had with MUST [Manchester United Supporters Trust] and fan representatives.

“We know our fans will not want to miss any games played in the coming months and will be disappointed if that is to be the case, but clearly we must all play our part in the efforts to combat coronavirus.

“By pushing the season ticket renewal deadline back and confirming our policy if games were to be cancelled or played behind closed doors, we want to ease any concerns our loyal fans may have in the current circumstances.”

Meanwhile, United goalkeeper David De Gea has donated €300,000 to fight the coronavirus in Madrid.

Spain is one of the worst-hit countries with a death toll of nearly 3,500. De Gea’s donation to the local authority in Madrid will be used to buy medical equipment and support vulnerable families.
