Former Chivas star and ex-Mexico international Benjamin Galindo remains hospitalized after suffering a stroke.
Galindo, who serves an an assistant coach for the San Jose Earthquakes, was in his native country with his family following the MLS suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Galindo’s son tweeted that his father’s surgery went well.
“We are very optimistic but we need to vigilant during these next 72 hours,” Benjamin Galindo Jr. said.
The Earthquakes also tweeted a message of support to Galindo, saying thoughts and prayers are with him.

“Benjamin is a beloved member of the Quakes family and means so much to the soccer community in North America,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “Our players and staff have the utmost respect for him as a coach and our entire organization admires him as a person. He truly embodies the Earthquakes spirit and we’re sending our thoughts and prayers to his family.”
The 59-year-old Galindo joined Matias Almeyda on staff at the Earthquakes in 2018. He previously had served as a manager of several Liga MX sides, including Chivas and Cruz Azul.
Among Mexico’s greatest midfielders, Galindo was part of El Tri’s squad at the 1994 World Cup.
