MANCHESTER, England — Pep Guardiola says he is “open” to extending his stay at Manchester City.
The 48-year-old has a contract until 2021, but has suggested he would welcome the chance to sign a new deal.
“I’m open, yes,” he told a news conference on Friday. “I’m so comfortable working with this club.”
Next season will be Guardiola’s fifth at the Etihad Stadium, making it his longest managerial tenure at any one club, and he hinted his future is in the hands of his players.
“It depends on results,” he said. “When you are five years it depends on the results. We will see what happens this season and next season.”
The two-time defending Premier League champions sit in third place in the table, one point behind Leicester City and nine back of leaders Liverpool.
“For me myself, I want to see my players and the reaction of my players and everything,” Guardiola added. “It is not simple like I want to extend. I want to see the club, I want to see the players, I want to see how still we are working together.
“That is the most important thing after five years together. You have to feel like we can do it together and enjoy to work together. When I feel that that is not worse, we will see with the club the best way.”
Man City drew 1-1 with Shakhtar in the Champions League on Tuesday and have already won their group to advance to the round of 16 and are away to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday.
