Real Madrid secured their 34th league title — and first since 2017 — with a 2-1 victory over Villarreal on Thursday.
Karim Benzema scored twice at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium to give Zinedine Zidane‘s men an insurmountable lead over second-placed Barcelona with just one match remaining. Vicente Iborra scored a late goal for Villarreal.
It gives Zidane his second La Liga crown as manager and 12th trophy overall covering two separate spells at the club.
The legendary ex-player was previously in charge from 2016 to 2018, when he won 10 trophies including one league title and three Champions Leagues, before resigning. Zidane also won the Spanish Super Cup with the club in January.
Real trailed Barcelona before the league took a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic, but rode an impressive string of 10 straight victories after the restart to overcome their bitter rivals.
Thursday’s win gives them 86 points from 37 matches, seven more than Barca, who had won La Liga the previous two seasons.
Real will finish their league campaign on Sunday at Leganes.
