Darko Kovacevic spent nine seasons in two spells with Real Sociedad.

Real Sociedad have wished their former player, Darko Kovacevic, “a swift recovery” following reports that he was shot at outside his home in Athens on Tuesday.

The ex-Serbia international and former Juventus forward was taken to a nearby hospital for wrist and knee injuries after dodging a bullet while being attacked by two men as he was getting out of his car in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada.

La Liga side Real Sociedad, where Kovacevic played for nine seasons in two spells, tweeted: “We are hearing worrying news from Athens. Darko, we wish you a swift recovery.”

Kovacevic, 46, told reporters after leaving hospital: “I saw a man getting out of a car with a gun in his hand and coming towards me.

“I instinctively dived to the right and he fired at me. Then he ran, got into the car and disappeared.”

Kovacevic helped Sociedad to a second place finish in 2002-03 and scored 20 times that campaign. He also turned out for Red Star Belgrade, Juve, Lazio and Olympiakos before a blocked artery forced him to retire in May 2009.

He won league titles in Serbia and Greece as well as the Intertoto Cup with Juventus in 1999, where he netted 26 times over two seasons.
