Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps should know each other quite well by the time the week ends.
The two Canadian rivals return to MLS regular-season action on Tuesday night, in the first of two meetings at Toronto this week.
Planted in Phase One of the league’s regular-season restart, Toronto (2-0-3, 9 points), Vancouver (2-3-0, 6 points) and Montreal will play an all-Canadian schedule between Tuesday and Sept. 9.
COVID-19 travel restrictions between the United States and Canada have limited the options for the teams. TFC and the Whitecaps will play again on Friday at Toronto.
“We’re thrilled to continue our regular season in a very unique all-Canadian series with added incentive,” Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said, according to the club’s official website.
Toronto and Vancouver have met 10 times in MLS play, with each team winning four matches. There have been two draws.
TFC return to action looking to move on from a disappointing finish at the recent MLS is Back Tournament near Orlando. Toronto went 1-0-2 to win Group C, then lost 3-1 to New York City FC in the knockout round.
“We never made excuses along the way and we’re not going to start now,” veteran midfielder Michael Bradley said, according to Toronto FC’s official website. “(We’ve got to) continue to work because there’s more games coming.”
Toronto forward Ayo Akinola was one of the stars of the tournament while recording five goals. TFC resumes the regular season sitting second in the Eastern Conference.
Vancouver, meanwhile, went 1-2-0 in Group B play, but managed to sneak its way into the knockout round despite some key contributors opting to sit out the event. A 2-0 victory over Chicago in the final group match highlighted the experience for the Whitecaps, who then lost in a shootout to Sporting Kansas City in the round of 16.
Vancouver’s Cristian Dajome recorded both of his goals this season during the tournament.
