Wrexham made a winning start to life in League One, beating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 at the SToK Cae Ras on Saturday.
After back-to-back promotions, Wrexham were playing their first game in England’s third tier in 20 years.
With celebrity co-owner Rob McElhenney watching on, Wrexham couldn’t have wished to get off to a better start. Max Cleworth put the Welsh side in front in less than nine minutes, stabbing a volley home from close range after a corner was flicked on at the near post.
Twenty minutes later, Wrexham’s lead was doubled. Ollie Palmer played a clever flick to Jack Marriott on the edge of the area, and the forward controlled and finished with aplomb on the volley.
But Wrexham didn’t have it all their own way, especially in the second half. Twice Wycombe reduced their deficit to one, via goals from Richard Kone and Sam Vokes, but in between Wrexham secured the win thanks to a pinpoint finish into the top corner from veteran striker Steven Fletcher.
Phil Parkinson’s side will next visit Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday before heading to Bolton for their second game of the League One season on Aug. 18.
