Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will consider omitting Paul Pogba from Manchester United’s Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar after the midfielder aggravated an ankle injury during the draw with Arsenal, sources have told ESPN FC.

Pogba complained of pain in his ankle following the 1-1 stalemate at Old Trafford on Monday night and is set to be assessed by medical staff on Tuesday before Solskjaer finalises his squad for the trip to the Netherlands.

The France international missed three games after taking a knock on the ankle against Southampton on Aug. 31 but played through the pain to feature against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup and Arsenal.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Pogba may be saved for the Premier League meeting with Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

United have recorded their worst start to a season for 30 years while Newcastle are 19th in the table after registering just one win from seven games.

Marcus Rashford is also a doubt for Thursday’s game against Alkmaar despite recovering from a groin problem to play 90 minutes against Arsenal.

Luke Shaw could return from a hamstring injury after returning to training last week.

United are top of Group L after a 1-0 win over Astana in their opening game.

Alkmaar are third in the Eredivisie behind Ajax and PSV Eindhoven and warmed up for Solskjaer’s side with a 2-0 win over Heracles on Sunday.

The game will be played on an artificial pitch at the Kyocera Stadium in The Hague — 70 miles away from Alkmaar — after the roof at the AFAS Stadium, Alkmaar’s home ground, collapsed last month.
